Editorial Signals

چکیده
Silent cerebral lesions (SCLs) are the newest complication to be described.3–5 In this issue of Circulation Arrhythmia & Electrophysiology, Rillig et al6 report their findings from their study of 70 patients undergoing atrial fibrillation ablation. They compared manual ablation with robotic intervention and found no difference in SCL between the groups (18% robot-assisted pulmonary vein isolation versus 15% manual pulmonary vein isolation). Although their study was likely underpowered to detect a difference between these groups, their and other recent reports have found a remarkably high incidence of SCL with various ablation techniques.7,8 Reactions from interventional electrophysiologists to these data have ranged from dismissing these findings as inconsequential artifacts to calls to reappraise the safety of endocardial atrial fibrillation ablation. Before the clinician can put Rillig et al’s data6 into perspective, we need to understand what we know of these detected signals, what they may represent, and whether they can be or need to be prevented.

Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the First EOG Controlled Robot
Controlling robots using signals from a human head started in 1988 with control of a robot using EEG signals [1-3]. The next year, 1989, the first control of a robot using EOG signal took place [4,5]. This Editorial marks 25th Anniversary of that event. In the sequel, before describing the 1989 pioneering event, the paper will describe the challenge of controlling objects using biosignals, stat...
متن کاملEditorial: Using neurophysiological signals that reflect cognitive or affective state
The central question of this Frontiers Research Topic is: What can we learn from brain and other physiological signals about an individual’s cognitive and affective state and how can we use this information? This question reflects three important issues which are addressed by the 22 articles in this volume: (1) the combination of central and peripheral neurophysiological measures; (2) the diver...

Early life experiences can have a profound impact on developmental trajectories, with implications for later life biobehavioral outcomes. This phenomenon is highly conserved across species and occurs in response to a broad range of environmental signals. The papers in this issue highlight the influence of experiences occurring during sensitive periods in early development, including prenatal, p...

Background This editorial introduces a revised and refreshed scope for Nutrition Journal, one of BioMed Central’s open access journals. Diet is among the leading risk factors for morbidity and mortality globally [1]. This signals the need for highquality policy-relevant nutrition research to advance the evidence base on strategies to promote and support healthy eating, as well as effective diss...
